The Cruise Ports of Los Angeles

The two main cruise ports in Los Angeles are the Los Angeles World Cruise Center in San Pedro and the Long Beach Cruise Cruise port, located in Long Beach. They are conveniently situated close together, separated only by a short distance.

A bay known as the ‘Los Angeles Harbor’ divides these two ports, creating a natural waterway that distinguishes the World Cruise Center in San Pedro from the Long Beach cruise port.

The Los Angeles Harbor is a busy place where lots of different ships come and go. There are big cargo ships bringing things from far away, and fishing boats with their catch of the day.

Over 40 million travelers flock to Los Angeles each year.

You’ll also see tugboats helping ships get in and out safely. Sometimes, you might spot navy ships and smaller boats for fun.

The harbor is important for businesses and the navy because of its good location and modern facilities.

Personal Tip:  If you’re cruising from Long Beach, consider flying in and out of Long Beach Airport (LGB). It’s conveniently located near the cruise terminal and so easy to navigate. This can save you time and make your travel experience much smoother!

Los Angeles World Cruise Center Parking

Parking at Los Angeles cruise ports

Cruise port parking at the Los Angeles cruise ports provides a safe and convenient place for passengers to leave their vehicles while they embark on their cruise adventure.

These parking facilities are located near the cruise terminals for easy access. Passengers can choose between self-parking or valet parking, depending on their preferences and budget.

It’s important to note that there is usually a fee associated with any cruise port parking, which can vary based on factors like the length of the cruise and the specific port location.

Book parking arrangements in advance, especially during busy travel periods.

Additionally, some cruise ports in Los Angeles may offer shuttle services to transport passengers from the parking area to the cruise terminal, enhancing convenience for travelers.

Parking at the World Cruise Center San Pedro

1. Label and Document: Take a photo of your parking spot or make a note of its location. If possible, label the level or section to make finding your car easier later. Drop a pin in Google Maps if you know how.

2. Drop Off Luggage First:  Before parking, consider dropping off your luggage at the designated area. This way, you won’t have to lug it around while searching for parking or taking the shuttle.

3. Arrive Early:  Arrive at the port early to secure a good parking spot or consider pre-booking. Popular ports can fill up quickly, especially during peak travel times.

4. Follow Signs and Instructions: Pay attention to parking signs and follow any specific instructions provided by the port staff.

5. Use a Parking App or Service:  Some cruise ports offer apps or services that can help you locate your car using your smartphone.

6. Park Near Landmarks:  If possible, park near a distinctive landmark or sign that you can easily recognize when returning. Many parking facilities have signage to help you know where you have parked. Look for signs like red level 32, or floor 6 south, etc.

7. Remove Important Items:  Don’t forget to take important items with you, like travel documents, passports, and medications. Hide any items that you cannot take or place inside the trunk. Most parking lots are not responsive to loss or damage.

8. Always ock Your Vehicle: Ensure your vehicle is locked and valuables are stored out of sight before leaving it.

9. Consider Off-Site Parking: Depending on the port, off-site parking facilities may offer cost-effective options with shuttle services to and from the terminal.

When choosing to sail from Los Angeles, you will have many options for cruise lines.

World Cruise Center

Several major cruise lines operate from the World Cruise Center in Los Angeles, also known as the Port of Los Angeles.

These cruise lines offer a variety of itineraries to destinations such as Mexico, Hawaii, and the Pacific Coast, and sometimes longer journeys to places like Alaska or the Panama Canal. Here are some of the cruise lines that commonly sail from the World Cruise Center:

1. Princess Cruises: Princess Cruises has a strong presence at the Port of Los Angeles and offers a range of itineraries, including trips to Mexico, Hawaii, and other destinations along the West Coast.

2. Carnival Cruise Line: When the Long Beach terminal is full, Carnival may operate cruises from the World Cruise Center, offering a mix of shorter trips to Mexico and longer voyages to Hawaii and other Pacific destinations.

3. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL): NCL occasionally deploys ships from the Port of Los Angeles for cruises along the West Coast, including trips to Mexico.

2. Cunard Line (Queen Mary 2): While not as frequent as Carnival, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 occasionally departs from the Long Beach Cruise Terminal for cruises to various destinations.

Driving in Southern California can be fast-paced, particularly in major cities like Los Angeles. Traffic can be heavy, and freeways are often congested.

Navigating the Road Network

Getting around the city may be challenging due to the intricate network of roads and freeways, especially in downtown LA.

Smooth driving tips

If you’re comfortable with city driving and traffic, it’s manageable. Here are some tips for a Smooth Drive

•  In case of an accident or breakdown, remember to pull over to the right shoulder, put on your hazard lights, and stay inside the car. Use the call boxes along the road to request assistance if you don’t have a cell phone. Dial 911.
• Plan your routes, use GPS or navigation apps, and acquaint yourself with local traffic regulations.
• Avoid rush hours when traffic is at its peak.
• If you find yourself driving slower than the flow of traffic, it’s best to stay in the right lanes to allow faster-moving vehicles to pass safely.
• Keep right except to pass.
• If you accidentally miss your exit, don’t panic. Simply continue to the next exit and circle back using surface streets or an alternative route.
• Watch for exits from the left lane.
• Some highways in Southern California have tolls. Make sure you have the necessary cash or an electronic pass (if available) to pay for tolls.
• Consider taking scenic routes along the coast or through the mountains for a more picturesque drive. Be aware that these routes may have varying road conditions, so plan accordingly.
• While Southern California is known for its sunny weather, occasional rain can make roads slick. Exercise caution and adjust your driving speed accordingly during wet conditions.
• Ensure your vehicle is in good condition before embarking on your drive. Check tire pressure, brakes, fluids, and lights to minimize the risk of unexpected issues. Don’t forget to check your gas gauge.

Southern California driving tips

1. Plan Ahead: Use navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze to check for traffic updates and find the best routes. Review the directions before you put the car in drive. If your exit comes too quickly, don’t worry. There are other exits not far away or you can get off at the next exit and come back around.

2. Avoid Peak Hours: If possible, try to travel outside of the morning and evening rush hours to minimize traffic congestion.

3. Carpool or Use HOV Lanes: Consider carpooling if you have companions. High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV), Diamond Lanes, and Carpool lanes are designated for vehicles with multiple occupants and can help you bypass some traffic. Make sure you know the rules:  what hours these lanes are open or closed and how many occupants must be in your car.

4. Stay Informed: Listen to traffic reports on the radio for real-time updates on road conditions and incidents. Look ahead and watch for traffic signs or updates. Don’t wait until the last minute to get over.

5. Be Patient: Traffic congestion is common, so it’s important to remain patient and drive defensively.

6. Use Turn Signals: Signal your intentions well in advance to let other drivers know your next move.

7. Watch for Lane Changes: Many highways have multiple lanes, and some drivers might change lanes suddenly. Stay vigilant.

8. Mind Parking Signs:  Pay close attention to parking signs, especially in busy urban areas. Parking restrictions are strictly enforced.

9. Prepare for Toll Roads: Some routes may have tolls, so be sure to have change or a credit card on hand

If you are renting a car, make sure you know how tolls are handled. You might be charged if you go through a toll automatically. However, if you don’t pay the toll, you can end up with a hefty bill later. Most tolls are read by license plate or RFID card.

10. Stay Hydrated:  Southern California can get hot, especially during the summer months. Make sure to have water available in your vehicle.

11. Rush hour: In Southern California, rush hours typically occur during the following times:

• 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM.
• 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM

Remember, driving in any urban area can be challenging, so it’s important to stay focused, be aware of your surroundings, and follow traffic laws.

Watch for no parking signs

Here is a personal experience that underscores the importance of being vigilant about parking signs, especially in bustling urban areas.

During one family outing to a museum in downtown Los Angeles, my Dad opted for street parking as we ventured towards the museum on foot.

However, upon returning several hours later, tired from a day of exploration, we were met with an unsettling sight – our car was nowhere to be found.

Upon closer inspection, we discovered a discreetly placed ‘no parking’ sign, indicating restrictions from 6 am to 6 pm. Regrettably, our car had been towed, resulting in a hefty impound fee and a much later-than-anticipated return home.

This incident is a lesson that can spare others from similar ordeals. Always remember to scrutinize parking signs to save yourself from unnecessary stress, expenses, and delays.

Alternatives to City Driving

If big-city driving isn’t your preference, consider alternatives such as public transportation, taxis, or ride-sharing services for specific activities or destinations. You may also be able to hire a driver for the day.

Southern California has so many great beaches, that it would be hard to find a bad one! Here are a few of my personal favorites, as well as popular ones that offer a variety of activities to make your day in the sun even more enjoyable.

1. Venice Beach: Notes: Lively spot for people-watching and street performers.

2. Santa Monica Beach Pier:  Notes: Iconic pier, bike paths, and sandy shores await.

3. Newport Beach Pier:Notes: Beautiful stretch of coastline perfect for swimming and water sports. Family friendly.

4. La Jolla Beach Tide Pools:Notes: Offers a combination of natural beauty, marine life encounters, recreational opportunities, and cultural attractions, making it a special destination for visitors of all interests.

Amusement Parks

California is renowned for its world-class amusement parks, offering thrilling adventures for visitors of all ages. You can find many of these parks within a couple of hours of the cruise ports in Los Angeles.

Disneyland Resort, often called the ‘Happiest Place on Earth,’ and Disney California Adventure Park are iconic destinations where beloved characters come to life and enchanting stories unfold.

Meanwhile, Universal Studios Hollywood brings the magic of movies to life with behind-the-scenes tours, heart-pounding rides, and captivating shows.

For an adrenaline-pumping experience, Six Flags Magic Mountain boasts an impressive array of roller coasters that are sure to satisfy thrill-seekers.

If you’re looking for a day filled with marine life and aquatic wonders, SeaWorld San Diego offers interactive exhibits and captivating shows featuring dolphins, whales, and other sea creatures.

And for a splash of aquatic fun, Knott’s Berry Farm’s Soak City Water Park promises a day of refreshing excitement. These parks promise unforgettable moments and a chance to experience the magic of Hollywood, beloved childhood tales, and the wonders of the sea, all within a short distance from the cruise ports.

Marine fans should head to Mission Bay, near San Diego to visit Sea World. See animal shows, interact with marine mammals, and ride all sorts of rides.

It may be an advantage for some people to rent a car before or after their cruise. This is up to you to decide if it is more of a hassle or benefit.

If you are considering renting a car, book it in advance. The price will likely be more budget-friendly than walking up to the counter.

If you wait to book at the counter they may have low inventory and you will end up with a car that you would not have otherwise chosen, you will also get to pay rack rate, the most expensive rate.
