🌊 Why I Upgraded to a Balcony Cabin

When I booked my transatlantic cruise on Carnival Mardi Gras, I knew we’d have a lot of sea days — seven in a row, in fact.

That’s a long time to be surrounded by nothing but the open ocean, and I wanted a space where I could enjoy those views without fighting for a lounge chair on deck.

So I splurged on a balcony cabin, telling myself it was an investment in comfort and sanity. But was it worth the extra cost? Let’s dive in.

🛏️ A Peek Inside My Balcony Cabin

Carnival’s balcony cabins are surprisingly spacious — about 220 square feet, including the balcony. Mine featured:

  • Beds: 2 twins that convert to a queen
  • Some rooms come with a small sitting area and a sofa (extra storage under the sofa)
  • Storage space under the bed and in the closets
  • A  private balcony with two chairs and a small table

It became my little retreat at sea.

I’d step outside each morning with a coffee from the Lido deck, wrap up in a robe, and just watch endless waves roll by.

There’s something almost meditative about having your own slice of ocean.

⏱️Why Balcony Cabins Shine on Longer Cruises

If you’re doing a transatlantic cruise or any itinerary with multiple sea days, a balcony cabin can completely change your experience.

Here’s why:

1. More Space to Breathe

Two weeks in an interior cabin may start to feel *tight*. Having a balcony gives you an outdoor escape — no crowds, no noise, just sea air.

2. Natural Light (and Sanity)

Waking up to sunlight instead of pitch-black walls makes a huge difference in your energy and mood during long voyages.

 3. Private Relaxation Spot

Sometimes you just want quiet — to read, journal, or sip wine while watching the sunset. A balcony gives you that without needing to fight for a deck chair.

4. Perfect for Scenic Sailing Days

When sailing past the Strait of Gibraltar or approaching the Spanish coastline, I loved having front-row seats from my own room.

💸 The Cost Question: Is a Balcony Worth the Upgrade?

Balcony upgrades vary depending on the sailing, but on longer cruises like mine, they can run $300–$800 or more per person compared to interior cabins.

So, is it worth it?

Here’s my honest breakdown:

A table with reasoning why or why you should not splurge on a balcony

When upgrading to a balcony doesn’t make sense

  • Itineraries with many port days: If you’re rarely in your room, you may not use the balcony much.
  • Cool Weather Crossings: Some transatlantic routes can be windy and chilly — though I still loved sitting out wrapped in a blanket! Ask for a blue blanket.
  • If You’re Prone to Motion Sickness: Higher decks (where balconies often are) can amplify movement. Learn more about motion sickness in our guide Seasickness tips for new cruisers

💡 Budget Tip: If you want the balcony vibe with a more budget friendly price tag, look for a Cove Balcony on Carnival — they’re partially enclosed, close to the water, and often less expensive.

🌞 My Favorite Balcony Moments

  1. Watching the sunset somewhere in the Atlantic with zero land in sight.
  2. Waking up to the sunrise over Spain after seven days at sea.
  3. Having my own quiet corner when I needed a break from the buzz of ship life.
  4. Seeing birds dive into the ocean after their dinner.
  5. Watching dolphins play in the wake of the ship.

There’s something special about being able to step outside, breathe in the sea air, and just be.

For me, those moments made the upgrade priceless.

Final Thoughts: Worth Every Penny on Long Cruises

If you’re taking a transatlantic or repositioning cruise like our Carnival Mardi Gras Cruise, the balcony upgrade is 100% worth considering.

It’s not just about the view — it’s about having a peaceful, private retreat during days when the horizon is endless and time moves slower.

Would I book a balcony again?

Without hesitation. 🌊✨
