If you’re sailing on the Carnival Mardi Gras, one dining specialty Restaurant you absolutely shouldn’t miss is Cucina del Capitano.

This charming Italian restaurant brings the warmth of family-style dining with authentic flavors, cozy décor, and plenty of “amore” in every bite.

Whether you’re in the mood for handmade pasta or hearty classics like chicken parmigiana.

This venue delivers a delicious slice of Italy right onboard.

While we were on the Mardi Gras for 14 nights transatlantic, this was one of our favorite restaurants.

We had the opportunity to try it both for lunch and dinner.

The Story Behind Cucina del Capitano

Cucina del Capitano translates to “The Captain’s Kitchen,” and the name isn’t just for show.

Carnival Cruise Line created this restaurant as a tribute to their Italian captains and their families, inspired by recipes passed down through generations.

The restaurant reflects a true Italian family gathering — food, laughter, and the joy of togetherness

📍Where to Find Cucina del Capitano

On the Carnival Mardi Gras, Cucina del Capitano is located in the La Piazza zone (Deck 8), right above Palm Restaurant. (Look at the deck plan here)

It’s easy to spot — you’ll find the space glowing with warm lighting and that unmistakable aroma of garlic and tomato sauce that draws you in.

Reservations are recommended for dinner, especially on sea days, and can be made through the Carnival Hub App or at the restaurant itself.

Atmosphere and Ambiance

From the moment you step inside, Cucina del Capitano feels like home.

The wooden tables, checkered tablecloths, and framed family photos give the space an old-world charm.

The staff often greet guests like long-lost family, and sometimes, you might even hear them singing a little “O Sole Mio” to add to the mood.

It’s intimate but lively — a place where conversation flows as easily as the Chianti.

Lunch vs Dinner Experience

During lunch on Carnival Mardi Gras, Cucina del Capitano offers a set menu with a choice of three salads, six pasta dishes, and 2 included two desserts.

I don’t remember which appetizer we got, but we both had the Linguine and meatballs and loved the meatballs.

They were so tender! The Matre’ D of the restaurant told us we had to come back for dinner and try Nonna’s Meatball, that it was to die for!

Other complementary places to try for Lunch include Chibang and Big Chicken.

By dinner, the restaurant becomes a full-service specialty venue with an expanded menu.

During our Carnival Mardi Gras sailing, your first visit was free, and subsequent visits were only $8.00.

The service slows down, the lights dim, and it becomes a cozy date-night spot or a family dinner highlight.

The Menu Highlights

Appetizers

Kick off your meal with favorites like fried calamari, arancini (risotto balls), or Nonna’s Meatballs simmered in rich marinara.

The maître d’ wasn’t joking. The meatball (you get one) was so tender and heavenly!

It comes lying on a bed of simple maranara sauce.

One per order. We did order an extra meatball.

We also sampled the Arancini.

It was good, but can’t stand next to the meatball.

Entrées

From the famous Chicken Parmigiana to the savory Linguine alla Carbonara, every dish tastes like it was made with love.

The Captain’s Pasta, a signature dish with shrimp and spicy tomato sauce, is a fan favorite.

I had the Chicken Parm. It was a good size and tasty. Mike had the Piatto Della Nona. Is was a pasty with white creamy sauce.

Desserts

End your night on a sweet note with tiramisu, cannoli, or limoncello cake — each one more decadent than the last.

I originally ordered a different dessert, but after seeing a diner with a really yummy looking chocolate dessert, I had to ask, what dessert is that???

It was called Mile High Gelato Pie.

It was also on the menu for an additional $6.00.

You bet I got that luscious chocolate dream!

And guess what? Another diner asked me the same question ⁉️
