7 Reasons why you need a passport, even if you are a new cruiser or traveler
If you’re a new cruiser or traveler, you may be wondering if you really need a passport. After all, your driver’s license and birth certificate are valid forms of identification in the United States. However, there are many reasons why it’s a good idea to have a passport, even if you don’t travel often.
Reason #1: To go on a cruise
Even if a cruise starts and ends in the United States, you may need a passport to visit foreign ports. This is because cruise ships are considered to be “floating vessels” and are subject to the laws of the countries they visit.
Cruise lines would prefer passengers to have a valid passport for the following reasons:
- To comply with international maritime laws.
- To expedite the boarding and disembarkation process.
- To provide passengers with assistance in case of an emergency.
- To protect passengers from identity theft and fraud.
Even if you’re not sure whether you’ll need a passport for your cruise, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and have one.
Ship Mechanical problems
Cruise ships are complex machines with a lot of moving parts. As a result, they are susceptible to breakdowns and other problems. In rare cases, a cruise ship may be unable to continue its voyage. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as:
- Mechanical problem: If the cruise ship experiences a mechanical problem that prevents it from continuing on its scheduled itinerary, it may need to divert to a different port. If the new port is in a different country, you will need a citizenship proof to disembark.
- Weather conditions. Severe weather conditions, such as hurricanes and typhoons, can also force a cruise ship to change its course or even cancel its voyage altogether.
- Medical emergencies. If a large number of passengers or crew members become ill, the ship may need to divert to a port to seek medical assistance.
- Security concerns. If there is a security threat, such as a terrorist attack, the ship may need to change its course or cancel its voyage altogether.
Last-Minute Itinerary Changes
There are a few ways that itinerary changes on a cruise might require a passport:
- Medical emergency: If you or a traveling companion become seriously ill or injured, and the cruise ship is unable to provide adequate medical care, you may need to be evacuated to a different country for treatment. In this case, you will need the key to the world to re-enter the United States.
- Weather event: If the cruise ship encounters severe weather, such as a hurricane or typhoon, it may need to divert to a different port for safety reasons. If the new port is in a different country, you will need a boarder pass to disembark. Our personal experience: On our recent Carnival Magic Cruise, our itinerary was changed. It was questionable if we were going to have to disembark in a foreign port. Luckily, we just ended up going to new ports, but we were happy that we had valid passports just in case.
- Political instability: If there is political instability in the country or region where the cruise ship is scheduled to visit, the cruise line may decide to cancel or alter the itinerary. If the new itinerary includes a visit to a different country, you will need travel papers to disembark. A good example of this was when the MSC Musica ship could not return to port because the war in Israel broke out:
MSC Musica was under way off Rhodes when the attack began, and she called at Mikonos as expected; however, MSC decided that under the circumstances, she would not be returning to Israel. Instead, MSC Musica’s itinerary would be cut short and Israeli passengers would be transferred to another vessel at Limassol.
Port Visits could require a passport
Even if your cruise ship does not divert to a different country, you may still need a travel ID to go ashore on shore excursions. Many cruise lines require passengers to have a identity card in order to participate in shore excursions.
If a cruise ship is unable to continue its voyage, the cruise line will work with passengers to make arrangements to get them home. This may involve disembarking passengers at a different port or transferring them to another cruise ship.

Reason #2: To fly domestically
Starting in 2023, all travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or passport to fly domestically. REAL ID is a new federal standard for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. It is designed to make it more difficult for terrorists and other criminals to obtain fraudulent identification.
REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and passports have enhanced security features, such as:
- A tamper-proof laminate.
- A holographic image.
- A raised seal.
- A machine-readable barcode.
If you don’t have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or passport, you will not be able to fly domestically after May 3, 2023. You can find more information about REAL ID on the website of the US Department of Homeland Security.
Reason #3: To prove your citizenship
A passport is the official proof of US citizenship. It may be required to open a bank account, get a loan, or even vote.
Personal experience: I have used my passport as proof of citizenship at my job. When checking into hotels or renting cars, I always hand over my passport when asked for identification.
In addition, a passport may be required for certain jobs or government services. For example, if you want to work for the federal government, you will need to have a passport.
Reason #4: To travel internationally
A passport is required to travel to any other country in the world. This includes even countries that are close to the United States, such as Canada and Mexico.
Last minute travel might require a passport
What would you do if you got a last-minute invitation to your best friend’s destination wedding in Belize ? With a passport, you can just book the trip.
Some countries may also have additional requirements, such as a visa or a certain number of blank pages remaining in the document. It is always a good idea to check the passport requirements for the countries you plan to visit before you travel.
Reason #5: To get emergency assistance
If you need help while traveling abroad, the US embassy or consulate can assist you if you have a passport. They can help you get medical care, replace lost or stolen travel documents, and even evacuate you from a dangerous country.
US embassies and consulates are located all over the world, so you can be sure that you will have access to help no matter where you are traveling.
Reason #6: To protect yourself from fraud.
A passport is a difficult document to counterfeit, making it a more secure form of identification than a driver’s license or birth certificate. This is important because identity theft is a major problem around the world.
If you have a secure form of identification, such as a passport, you are less likely to be a victim of identity theft.
Reason #7: To have peace of mind
Knowing that you have a passport can give you peace of mind while traveling. You’ll never have to worry about being stranded without identification.
If you have a passport, you can be confident that you will be able to travel freely and safely.
Keep your passport safe
Conclusion to why a passport is the only ID you need
As you can see, there are many reasons why it’s a good idea to have a passport, even if you’re just a new cruiser or traveler. A passport is a valuable investment that can open up new opportunities for travel and adventure.
