Smooth check-in and boarding
We boarded Carnival Magic from a new port for Carnival, Norfolk, VA. If you’re driving to the port, a complimentary shuttle service is available from the parking lot to the port.
Carnival Magic leaves from the Port of Norfolk at Nauticus.
For those being dropped off, consider opting for one of the nearby hotels just a few blocks down the street. There is only one way in and out. The traffic was crazy, bumper to bumper.

It was maybe ten or fifteen minutes and we walked it at a leisurely pace stopping along the way to take photos or sit as I became tired. The walk is totally doable for many.
Keep in mind that check-in time is strictly enforced, although some employees may be more lenient than others.
The boarding process was very efficient. From the moment we checked in to stepping onto the ship, Carnival’s staff provided a quick and hassle-free experience.
There were no long lines or confusion – just a swift transition from land to sea. In fact, we found ourselves on board with a drink in hand and our first meal on the Lido in less than 20 minutes.
Getting into the cabin the first time
Our check-in appointment was 12:30 to 1:00 PM. We had a short wait until we could get into our cabin.
Keep in mind that on most cruises, staterooms are available until after 1:30 p.m. This may be different for guests with status, guests who have purchased Faster to the Fun, or suite guests.

The Carnival Magic is a beautiful ship, in great condition for a ship of her age. The welcoming crew sets the tone for the journey ahead. The common areas are well-maintained and offer a lively atmosphere.
Carnival Magic distinguishes itself from other Carnival ships with a soothing color palette of blues and greens, a departure from the vibrant pinks and oranges seen on some other Carnival ships.
I personally enjoyed the tilework around the buffet area. The colors reminded me of a mermaid’s tail, adding a charming touch.
The crew’s warmth and hospitality remained consistent throughout our voyage.

Personal experience on Carnival Magic
We choose a balcony cabin for our cruise, and it was a decision that truly enhanced our experience. Our specific cabin,#8435, was ideally situated on the ship.
It was five floors down to the main dining room or a quick two floors up to the Lido deck.
Additionally, our balcony overlooked Guy’s Pig and Anchor Restaurant, which surprisingly never caused any noise disturbances.
In contrast, this cabin was a close to the elevators. We could hear the ding of the elevators at times.
I also noticed that compared to a similar room catagory on Carnival Panorama, Carnival Magic had more storage space.
Expect the unexpected
Cruising during hurricane season can be both exciting and a bit uncertain.
We set sail on the Carnival Magic from Norfolk knowing there might be some tricky weather.
Hurricane Dorian
- After our visit to Half Moon Cay, we had to change our route because of Hurricane Dorian.

- For safety reasons, we had to switch out two of our planned stops along the way.

The crew on Carnival Magic provided excellent service. Upon boarding, we were welcomed with warm smiles and genuine helpfulness.
During the journey, some crew members even called us by name, which added a personal touch and made us feel valued.

Our head Waiter, Rio, truly stood out. Learning of my interest in experiencing diverse cuisines, on our final night he took it upon himself to prepare a traditional Filipino dish called Chicken Adobo with a side of rice. It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture that left a lasting memory.
Additionally, Vanessa, the hostess, went the extra mile by asking about our favorite desserts. To our surprise, on the last night, several of our preferred desserts were specially prepared for us, even though they weren’t on the evening’s menu. This bespoke touch from the chefs was a delightful and unexpected treat

1. From the dining room staff remembering our drink preferences to the guest services team going the extra mile to assist with a special request, there were numerous instances of exceptional service that left a lasting impression.

2. Security was always friendly and approachable whenever we hopped on or off the ship. One night, our neighbors were making quite a ruckus, and we had to ask guest services to call security. They got there surprisingly fast, and we could hear them handling the situation.
3. While we were docked, we saw the crew doing safety drills, which was pretty reassuring. And when a hurricane was on the horizon, the crew acted quickly to make sure we were all safe. It was nice to see how much they cared about our well-being.

Despite the change, we still had a great time, especially with the Carnival excursions.
Would we sail from Norfolk again?
As we look back on our cruise experience, we’ve come to a conclusion. While we had a nice time exploring the home port of Norfolk, we will probably not choose to sail from there again. We had a similar experience sailing from New Orleans.
In the future, we would lean towards sailing from ports like Miami ,Orlando, or even Los Angeles.
These locations offer many more flight options and affordable lodging, making the entire travel experience smoother and more convenient for us.
Will We Cruise on Carnival Magic Again?
With the good experience that we had sailing on Carnival Magic, we would consider sailing on this ship in the future.
The trip was filled with memorable moments, from the vibrant onboard atmosphere to the exceptional service.
